Whatever you do : DO NOT WORK ON A "LIFE" WASHING MACHINE! That can be lethal!
ALWAYS remove the powercable from the socket, and have it within your line of sight on the floor. Make sure!
If possible have someone around to assist you.
.
Tell me please : WHAT "came off" and WHERE did you see that spring? Describe the spring please. It may be possible to identify the problem with that.
You say you reached in : WHERE did you reach in, when the machine started for a second?

I would suggest you get a new lid switch -- sounds like this one is shot

It is hard to give you much information without a BRAND name -- and MODEL

Make sure to unplug washer when replacing -- lid switch -- SAFETY

You could lose your LIFE if you work on a LIVE circuit!!!
