Kenmore washer grinding gears

Asked Sep 16, 2009, 12:23 PM —
I have a Kenmore 110.23012102, top load. About half way through the wash cycle it started to be very loud and then making a grinding noise. I thought maybe I had too much in and took out about half of the load. I still made this awful grinding noise and then stopped all together. I was able to get it to drain. I took apart the dog ears and they seem to be somewhat smooth so I will replace that part first, any other suggestions?

My washer won't agitate or spin, but instead makes a noise like gears are grinding. It's fairly loud. Is this a self fix problem or do I need a technician?
