Foul tasting water from refrigerator water dispenser
I have a GE Profile side by side refrigerator roughly 3yrs old. A couple of weeks ago it started getting warm. We cleaned the coils in the back and it started to cool back down, however, a foul smell started that day. Now the water and ice from the dispenser taste bad and the smell is still there. I've changed the water filter, but it didn't help. I've also cleaned out the fridge with bleach. The smell and taste are almost plastic-like. Any suggestions?

Charcoal absorbs foul smelling odor in the fridge. Also avoid overloading the freezer with fish and meat and storing it longer than 3 days.

If there is an inline filter, replace it. They have carbon in them, which loses its effectiveness in a relatively short time. Most people go way too long without replacing the filter. Ideally you should replace it at least once every 6 months.

Whether there is a filter or not, dump the ice, and let the water on the door run for 30 minutes. You could put a little piece of flexible tubing on the spout and put a bucket on the floor. You can buy the tubing at about any hardware or building supply. Usually, a 3/8 od, 1/4 id clear tubing will fit on the spout. But sometimes you would need a 1/2 od x 3/8 id. It is real cheap. Otherwise you can stand there with a cup for half an hour.

Professionally, I would put some chlorine through the line and the tank, but that could be tricky for the average homeowner. You can also replace the line that brings the water into the fridge. Again, it is inexpensive.

That may help. Good luck to you.
