Can I keep a washer and dryer outside?

My husband and I have found a lovely apartment that we want to rent, but the washer and dryer hook ups are outside, against the south wall of the house. There is absolutely no protection against the elements, it would be completely exposed. Is there something we can build or place over it? Any suggestions? We live in Austin, where summers are hot and winters are relatively mild, although we do get a number of 30-degree days. Thanks!

I really don't think that's a good idea unless you don't care much for the washer and dryer..
