Partition & Formatting problems (OS X)

Firstly I would like to say hello to everyone here!

I'm having a problem when it comes to "Erasing" (formatting) and in particular partitioning my LaCie Big Disk firewire drive.

It connects ok, transfers and reads ok, but I want to create seperate partitions. I use the disk utility under OS X, which says it is in progress and then completes the task in under 10 seconds!! Saying that it is complete. But when I check it, it hasn't worked!!

Can anyone help me on this one?

Thanks in advance.
