Installing Snow Leopard

Do i need to do anything special to my iMac before installing Snow Leopard and iLife and iWork? Like backing up my entire hard drive and applications? Or can I just insert the DVD and install the O.S?

If you are updating from 10.4 or 10.5 the update should run and leave everything intact. It is always a good idea to do a backup.
