I am very happy with Comodo Antivirus that you can find a link to at Free Internet Security Software. I have used it with a variety of other free security software products (such as Comodo Firewall) with great results!

Kaspersky isn't free. The question was for free antivirus recommendations. AVG and avast! are a couple of proven products and as I mentioned previously Comodo is a great new product. PC Tools Antivirus Free Edition is also worth a look. Here is a link to a short article about free antivirus software.

I used Avast for about 2 years with great results. At least on XP machines. I have not heard how it works on Vista.
