I was just diagnosed with H1N1, boy am I miserable. The worst is the body aches and the sore throat. I'm gargling with the family recipe, vinegar, salt and the warmest water you can stand. The aches I'm treating with ibuprofen alternating with acetaminophen, lots of fluids. Is there any thing else I can do. (other than riding it out next to the wood stove)
i have not had the swine flu, but i have had your regular run of the mill flu...i agree that the muscle aches are bad, what i did was,put a pillow or cushion under your legs,it just seemed to support them, and hot water bottles to the muscles..

honey and lemon is good to for the sore throats.
Thank you for your response, yesterday my husband took me to hospital, I had almost lost the ability to swallow, even my own spit, sounds horrible sorry. Anyway at the hospital they diagnosed me with a secondary bacterial infection, acute uvulitis/pharyngitis/tonsillitis. So I opted for antibiotics, they did an IV drip with a pretty powerful cocktail, I'm still pretty sick, but I'm hopeful I'm on the mend. I'm still forcing down my tea, with honey and lemon and using my humidifier, I've given up gargling for now, I'm afraid it might be too hard on my poor throat right now.
The old fashioned things like lots of chicken broth, orange juice, vitamin C and zinc. Also echinaechia and elderberry extract for a couple weeks is suppose to help.

This is accurate...dependent of course on any other medications she may be taking.
We must remember that herbal supplements can interact with medications...sometimes good, yet others possibly deadly. Without knowing exactly what medications she is on, we have to be careful what herbal remedies we suggest.
Fluids - can't stress the importance. Water and lots of it. Whenever you eliminate, replace. Even if you don't want to.
Chicken broth or hot tea with honey. Again, no harm.
Pain meds: Don't over do. Just enough to be comfortable and keep the fever down.
Nose decongestants: avoid at ALL costs if you can. Saline spay as often as you like.
Nasal rinses: such as Nielmed rinses. Special buffered salt packet and a special bottle with warm water. As often as you like.
Cough expectorents. Useful, but don't over do it.
Stay warm: I can't stress it enough to cause your body to sweat.
Ice packs: be careful, but it can make certain areas better such as the warmness that can occur around the kidneys. Again, do't over do.
New for me this year: Raw onion in your room in a dish. let it sit. Don't eat it.
Also new for me this year: try a small piece of raw onion to eat. To much may overload he body especially if it works.
SWEETS: Eliminate ALL. Absolutely, no HOT CHOCOLATE or COFFEE. Minimize the use of cough drops. Honey and tea is much better.
Your own garbage bag: Can't stress this. ALL of your waste gets handles by you and only you. Place in a separate plastic bag keep it closed when not in use. Not necessarily tight.
New for this year: Have only you handle the bedding/clothes when you were sick. Particularly the bedding. You carry it directly to the washer. Don't infect any other family member.
Swine flu sucks. It really really REALLY sucks.
I had it this year, and like KeepItSimpleStupid I realized the importance to prevent cross-contamination, so I slept on a futon instead of sharing a bed with my live-in boyfriend. I called it my 'death-futon'
I got through it by sleeping as much as I could, lots of nasal salts, and plenty of fluids.
However you should keep in mind that the body's immune response takes approximately 7 days to come into effect. If you are still signficantly sick after 7 days, see a doctor.
