Hi,

I am applying for an ITIN for my wife who is on H-4. I am sending a W-4 form along with my tax returns. I like in IL.

The W-7 form needs a notarized or certified Passport photocopies, but I am unable to find a single notary who can certify / notarize her passport photocopies. I have called up public notaries, visited my regular bank, currency exchanges.. but all of them say that they have stopped doing notarizing passports.

The public notaries were actually 'not sure' if they are allowed to notarize....

I will appreciate any help I can get here.

Thanks,

Ronak

I am gonna answer my own question here.

I ended up going to the local IRS office to get the photocopies certified.

The good thing about going to the IRS office was that the tax officer verified the photocopies, and then he also stamped the w-7. I think the stamp was to indicate that he had verified the document.

Before leaving I asked him who would've been the correct person to notarize the document, and he told me that the IRS office is the best place for such cases. Otherwise they may have to call that person to the IRS office to show them more documents.

And as a bonus, I didn't have to go to the post office. He accepted my Federal returns then and there.

The only caveat here is that you may have to go to the IRS office even before it opens to avoid the long lines.

The next process for me, is to wait for the ITIN # to be mailed to me in 4-6 weeks. Use that ITIN # to file my State taxes. (I have extension to file state tax).

Great! The only provision I make is to CALL the local IRS office before you go.

Not every IRS office can process ITIN applications.
