when the furnace turns on to start a cycle, theres a loud whoomph noise. any idea what that may be. thanks

It is the sound of your fuel igniting. It really does sound like whoomph, good job. If you believe this is a new sound or getting loader you should have your furnace inspected. You might have a weak igniter or poor air mix.
