I have a ceiling fan that has a light kit and I have two loose wires that I assume controls the speed of the fan because when I try to change the speed, nothing happens. It stays on high and off. My question is where do I attach the loose wires so that I can control fan speed? The loose wire colors are brown and purple.

We need more info before we can help. How do you control the fan, remote, chains or wall switch? Where are the loose wires, in the canopy or where.

The fan is controlled by pull chain and the loose wires are in the canopy of the fan where all the switches are attached.

Has any work been done on the fan, or lights, or has the speed never worked? Did you try to replace the chain or switch?

Are you located in the USA or Canada?
Are the unused wires a part of the fan wiring or a part of the house wiring?

The unused wires are the wires on the fan inside the housing where the light kit attaches to the fan.

I'm not sure. First of all, I thought that the light kit didn't work because I pulled the chain and the light didn't come on. Come to find Out later that the light kit works as if it takes a 3-way bulb. In checking the kit, I noticed the loose wires. The fan is mounted and as I said when I pull the light switch, I have to pull it twice to come on and twice to turn it off so I assume it is designed to have a 3-way bulb in it.

Those wires are typically connected to the fan switch so you can get 3 speeds. Where are the wires from the pull chain switch going?
