I'M a j1 researcher and my wife a J2 with no income. I prepared 1040NR for federal taxes but the California 549NR form asks for my wifes SSN or ITIN and we have not neither of them for her or the children. What can we do?
thank you very much a prompt response.

If you are from india, you can claim your wife and child as dependents. Hence, you NEED to get ITINs.

You are correct. I mistakenly implied that your J-1 status was that of a student or business apprentice.

Are you a researcher for a non-profit organization, or for a private for-profit corporation??
