Hello,

I got married last year and I need to file my tax return together with my wife, but since we brought her sister to live with us, my wife says some of her friends mentioned that if we file separated our income tax, she could have her sister as a dependent which, would help us to get some support. I am saying this is not right, since her sister is not handicapped, and over 21, I just think this is wrong, and that we have to do our taxes together. Please let me know what to do, because I need to be sure that what my wife wants will not cause any problems.

You BOTH can claim her sister as a dependent IF:

- Yoo provided more than HALF of her total support

AND

- She did not make more than $3,300.
