Help Please! Long story short. Moved to NC from CT in 1993. Just received first statement from city of Stamford, CT tax collector saying i owe a $68 tax on a vehicle i owned in 1992 they have now added 14 years of interest on this debt making it a total of $269. I've never seen a statement on this in my life they say it took 14 years to find me even though none of my other creditors have had this problem. I don't feel i should be responsible for a bill i never saw however am willing to pay the original $68 but not the interest they say i have to pay it all. Do i have any options here and do they have a right to put it on my credit report after all this time?

I know the principal of the thing, but don't mess with taxes., city , state or federal. YOu can requested a negotiation to settle the amount, but well worth even borrowing the money and pay the lousy $269. good luck.

There is no statute of limitations for collecting back taxes.

Normally, the IRS and the states stop trying after ten years, but they are NOT required to stop.
