View Full Version : How can I stop my dogs from peeing and pooing in the house?

We have two male shih tzus. Both neutered, both housebroken. We have had problems in the past with the younger male peeing randomly and the older dog marking over this. We are now fostering a young female shih tzu. She is not housebroken and has frequent accidents in the house and it is causing both our dogs to regress one hundred percent in their training. I am at home all day, take them for walks in the morning and evening, take them outside frequently and put them in the laundry room if I am going to be gone for more than an hour. Our house REEKS now and I am at a loss of what else to do. They are sneaky little rascals and they slip off to do their business on the sly. They will actually be outside, do their business and come in and sneak off and do it again! Other than keeping them leash clipped to me at all times, what can I do? We have found a home for the little girl but will not surrender her for another week.

It is hard for sure. I foster many dogs and have found two things helpful : 1) I take them out every two hours and stay out until they go 2) Don't let them eat and drink whenever they want to, feed them and give them water on a schedule, then 45 minutes later you will know that they have to go!

Hope this helps!

Do you have a source for water on a schedule? I've never heard this before - and I'm not saying it isn't correct. I've just never heard it.

I had a GSD that developed torsion bloat (is that the correct term), and I was told not to withhold water because that would cause him to gulp and "over water" when I did allow him to drink.

There must be a middle road - but I don't know what it is.
