I just built a barebone computer, but the power light lights up, but there is no sound and the dvd device will not open or come on, could this be the motherboard, it is new or even the processor I placed in the socket, it is new as well

Time to start over and make sure everything is properly seated.
The best way is to remove each part and reseat it, double checking that its home tight.
I had a similar problem with a server and found one of the CPU's was 100% secure.

Curlyben has the right idea.
Go through and make sure all components are plugged in, especially the power supply cables.
Do you have an audio cable running from the DVD device to the motherboard?
Hey, I've not plugged things in correctly or have had them off a row of pins many times.

If the DVD-Rom does not open, it shouldn't be anything with your motherboard, the power for that comes directly from the power supply. Make sure the power cable is completely connected to the DVD-Rom, if it is I would try another power supply.

I took the mother board out and noticed some of the pins in the socket were a little bent, I tested the power supply connector I pin pointed the green wire with a black ground and the power supply did run.. I thought it would probably be the m.b. due to the pins.. any other advice? Thanks
