I have a 7 yr old mini schnauzer that our vet thinks she has pyometra. (We take her in the morning but spoke with him on the phone tonight). My question is we know that she had went into heat and had a normal one 2 1/2 months ago. She is very swollen and is bleeding a bit now. She won't eat or drink and lays on my bathroom floor. Is it normal for them to bleed if it is pyometra?

Pyrometra is serious disease in dogs.. sometimes it can cause death... so take it seriously... pls go and ask your vet for treatment and if need then get her operated... I too have dogs and one of my female dog has bleeding after urine and fowl smell urine and frequent urination..
But now she is fine after medication.. she had calculi stone in her bladder...
U please consult vet.. and follow him..

In case no one has educated on what pyometra is, let me explain.

Pyometra is a bacterial infection of the uterus. Things just don't lose up tightly after giving birth or having a heat cycle which allows bacteria to enter the cervix and cause problems, such as pyometra.

There are two types of pyometra.. There is a closed type, where you will not see any type of discharge. Your dog will act uncomfortable, drink a lot, urinate a lot, maybe vocalize pain and discomfort, may come off feed and will be VERY lethargic. This type of pyo is very deadly. Your dog can and will die if no medical attention is given. The other type of pyometra is an "open" pyo. This is when you will see red to pink discharge coming from the vulva. It can look like a normal heat cycle. You're pet will still act uncomfortable, will still drink and urinate a lot and act very lethargic. Although all pyometras are still deadly, an open pyo is a lot better to have than a closed one.

The best treatment for your dog is an emergency spay. She's the right age to have a pyometra, I would be surprised if she didn't have it.

Good luck
