I purchased a Hampton Bay fan on EBay. I need a downrod to go with it. Does it need to be the same brand?

No just the same size and type. Some are threaded metal pipe. Some are simply metal pipe with holes thru which pins attach them to the fan and the ceiling bracket.

Most are 3/4" pipe. Some threaded, some with a locking pin hole. As Harold said, match what you have. HD has a pretty good assortment.
