I'm having a problem with my heater, when I turn it on, the outside a/c compressor comes on and trips the breaker. The a/c works fine by itself. Could this be a problem with my thermostat?

No, you probably need to call a service company. It could be as simple as a bad dual capacitor to a bad compressor.
