I am not sure if this is the tx grease monkey site. I was sitting in my 03 Mustang 6 cylinder with AC running at lunch for around 30 minutes. In the front of the engine there was a noise, then on the way home I heard a popping noise like a bearing. I opened the hood and put a piece of wood to water pump, alternator, and the shroud on the radiator fan. The noise is coming from the radiator fan. There is a smell like something electrical burning.

I was wondering if it is the fan would it be the fan motor and if it is would it be easier to buy the shroud with the motor and fan already in it.

Also will it drive if the fan stops and if so for how far?

I would buy and install a new radiator fan assembly. They cost around $150. You overtaxed the thermostatically controlled fan, by sitting still and running the A/C for 30 minutes.

With an aluminum head engine, I would not drive it until you replace the radiator fan assembly--severe damage could result, if it overheats. Make sure, however, it's the radiator fan assembly and not the A/C condenser fan.

With extreme heat upon us, I recommend that you use Mobil 1 5W-30 engine oil and Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in your transmission and power steering system. The higher coefficient of heat associated with synthetics will allow your engine, transmission, and power steering unit to run cooler, which, in turn, will ease some of the load on your cooling system. Be sure to change the engine coolant every 30,000 miles, with a 50/50 mixture of G-05 antifreeze and distilled water.

On my car in that it is a 03 that was built sometime in 02 , I have had to use earlier model parts.

I only have one fan and I am not sure if it is suppose to be turning but I can reach in and turn it with ease in the direction towards the passenger side of the car. I didn't think to see if it would turn in both directions.

Is it suppose to be able to be turned by hand?

Yes, the fan should easily rotate by hand.

When you change the transmission fluid, drop and clean the pan and magnet (use brake cleaner), replace the filter, and refill with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Don't use a T-Tech machine at a quick-lube outfit. They won't drop and clean the pan/magnet or replace the filter. The machine will stir up all of the crud in the bottom of the pan, clog the filter, and lead to transmission failure.

To partially change the power steering fluid, simply take a hand pump, such as from a bottle of Curel Hand Lotion, and remove the fluid from the reservoir. Refill the reservoir with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF to the proper level. Repeat this process again in two weeks. After that, do it every 40,000 miles.
