My tv remote causes led light to work but does not do what you ask. Light starts flashing and then after a few seconds goes onto stand by.

You can get the the codes here: Universal Remote Codes - Remotecodelist.com (http://www.remotecodelist.com/)
You can find instruction books on the internet. If it was working and just started doing this then something may have been spilled on it and I can help you fix it; I had to do the same thing yesterday. Take out the batteries and see if there are any screws to remove. If not, you will have to pop it open by using a butter knife on edges and carefully prying it open. Once you get it apart you will see a rubber key pad and a circuit board. Spray them down with a good cleaner or use dishwashing soap and scrub lightly with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Clean the little carbon buttons on the rubber keypad and the contacts on the circuit board. Then pat dry with paper towel and dry with a hair dryer or place in sun. Reassemble and it will work perfectly.
