ill be driving and when i give it too much gas or i go up a hill the check engine light will come on and the car lags until i put it in nuetral and restart the the car, then the light goes off and im good to go till it does it again. i replaced the fuel filter so far

Check for codes. It could be that you need to replace the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil inside the distributor.
