i have a IBM thinkpad T42 and have noticed that the bottom of the laptop is very warm how do i stop this from happening

Unfortunately you can't as modern machine do produce alot of excess heat.
You can mitigate it by ensuring the vents are free from dust and there is a ample air flow to them.
There are cooling trays available should the temperature become too great under heavy load.
