My HHR was involved in a minor auto accident that damaged the radiator and the a/c condenser. Now the dealer is saying that the expansion valve is bad and I will have to deal with the insurance company. Can the expansion valve go bad due to the condenser being damage and the a/c system being opened?

Usually the expansion valve will not go bad just because the condenser was damaged BUT anything is possible. Tell them you want the old parts back this way it might cause them to actually replace the valve and just not say it is bad. When job is done look at the old valve and new valve they put on and see if they are the same just to be sure.
