I am 15 years old and A couple days ago I was caught shoplifting an item worth 15$ and I was brought to the security room. They said that I was going to be charged with theft under 5000. I have a court date next month and I have a couple questions. I am very sorry for my actions regret it and it will never happen again. This is my first time having a run in with the law.
1- is there a point in getting a lawyer?
2- what is the ideal punishment for a minor in this case?
3- what will the process be when I show up 2 court?
4- will I get any fines?

Yes anytime you go to criminal court it is best to have an attorney.

You will get a large fine and probation most likely, if this is a first offense you may ask for a program to have the records removed after you pay fine and probation.

What happens in court will depend on what you plead, the judge may ask your parents some questions to be sure that there is not trouble at home or in school.

Yes expect a fine, 300 to 500 dollars, and expect the store to send a separate request for a civil penalty of about 300 to 500 dollars.
