My ? Is.. I have been collections free for many years now, I went through a " consumer Propsal" a few years back here in ottawa and I fulfilled the contract and received our dissmissal... now hers the question.. I recentaly got a letter from a collection company saying I owed citibank mastercard 13,600.45 but if paid today it would be 1814.40 yadda yadda.. when the bankruptcy company did their credit search to do the proposal they did not come up with this debt. It is a debt from 1989 and the proposal was done in 2006... and now this collection agency is trying to collect on a credit card debt over 20 years old. I cannot even remember the card it was so long ago let alone being contacted by them for collection of same. I have not hidden myself in so much as my name and addy were always in phone book and I never left this area of living... Anyways.. here it is... Can they legally try to collect this debt after such a long period even after the proposal found no info when they did their thing? I am also on Ontario Disability and therefore little monetary flow at all... Help...

Can they legally try to collect this debt after such a long period of time

A debt never expires. If this debt was not discharged, then they can try to collect on it. However, there tools for collection are very limited. The Statue of Limitations has expired so they cannot sue to recover the debt. Also, Canada has a law similar to the US about how they contact you. You can specify that they only contact you by mail.
