I can not restore sound to my computer. This happened a few years ago and I reformatted the computer. I would like to know if I can use the application recovery disk to restore my systems original settings but not lose everything that is already installed on my computer. (Other software, documents, internet settings)

No, Generally Recovery disks return the PC to factory settings wiping out whatever you had. You can download the sound drivers from HP's WEB site and reinstall them.
