HI everyone I bought a shih tzu for my sons birthday, the puppy has 17 months and when it comes night time it's bad,we usually left him on a crate since we don't want him in our room but he can't stop crying,I even try to leave a radio on and he cry for about 1 hour then he stops about 2 hours again he cry about an hour and stop 2 hours and so on,I don't really know what to do anymore. Also in the morning she started to barking a lot and I need to be on a quiet place because I work from home and need to answer a lot of calls please if anybody has some tips, I'll really appreciated thanks.

Let him sleep in your son's room, with a bed right beside his bed.
He's LONELY and new, poor dog.

The dog is almost 2 years old.. She needs to learn the rules of your home.

How many hours a day is this dog spending in its crate? You might be exceeding the time this dog can handle being alone. Get her out and exercise her. Teach her something. You try going an entire day, and night, with next to no interaction.

The dog could also have developed Separation Anxiety. If that is the case, you're going to have to start some behavior modification training in order to get the upper hand on this.

Buy a bark collar that she can wear while in her crate. She can learn to be quiet.. However, I would use this as a last resort. Exercise and training are a must! There is really no way around it. This breed is pretty low key, an hour at a park, dog park, walk around the block will be good enough for her.. but she still needs to get out.

Give her stuff to do during the day. Give her toys that force her to think.

Teach her to be calm so that she can be around you while you are working. I hope you don't have her locked up the entire time you are working.. if so, she is spending 8 hours (give or take) in a crate during the day, then bed time in a crate. That is a lot of time to be cooped up with nothing to do.

My advise.. Exercise, training and attention. Works wonders in that order...

Thank you joy and luck for your advice... All day I work from home and my **** zhu is great , has so many toys he play all day he's a quick dog... Like an angel... All mornings and night I take him outside but he don't pee and poop outside but indoor sometimes he pees in a pad sometimes everywhere.. Poop well anywhere...
When its night time I put him in the crate and that's when it get worst crying , barking... I only put him on the crate at night time... I try so many methods...

Put him in the crate during the day.

It sounds like he isn't house trained.. You're giving him too many freedoms and he is doing as he pleases.

Start house training him like you would with a new puppy. Put him on a schedule with feeding and stick to it. Feed him ONLY twice a day and please, follow the serving size on the back of the dog food bag that is required for your breeds weight.

If he is use to pottying on a potty pad, try putting a dirty potty pad outside where you'd like him to go potty at. The smell should connect the dots for him to potty there.. Close off the room (if possible) that he is pottying in. If you cannot watch him, put him outside (if you feel comfortable with it) or put him in his crate. I realize you work from home, so practice crate time on the weekends or when you are done with work... Keep him in the crate until he is quiet. Once he is quiet, then go get him.. It may take a long time before he settles down.

You should also talk to your vet about sparation anxiety. It sounds like your dog has a pretty decent case of it. There are medicines that help control the anxiety so that you can live with your dog. I would also suggest obedience training. Separation anxiety dogs need obedience... they need to be told what to do, how to do it and for how long they need to be doing it.

Shih Tzu's are not easy dogs to train. They were bred to be a lap dog and they do pretty good at it.. so I would suggest you find a trainer that has a good track record in training these kinds of dogs...

Training a dog means training the owners. Get a book on dog training. He should be totally housebroken by now, for one thing.
You haven't said WHERE the crate is at night. Why can't he sleep in your son's room? How old is your son? Why isn't he involved in the training? It's work.
