Hello kedarh,

Although Microsoft say you should be able to upgrade your system to XP without losing any important data, they do recommend you backup any important data to be sure. I think you will agree it does make sense.

The first thing you need to confirm is that you have the correct system requirement for the upgrade. You can check this by visiting:

Windows XP Professional System Requirements (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx)

Once this is done go to the following link:

Windows XP: Upgrading (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/upgrade.mspx)

This will give you a walkthrough for upgrading your system. It may be a good idea to print this before starting the upgrade process.

You should ALWAYS have a backup of your data files. Whether you are upgrading or just from normal operation. I backup my data files daily.

However, when you do the upgrade the files will be transferred.
