Hello,

I am an international student on my OPT and work for a semiconductor company in california. I am being charged ca sui/sdi tax from all my paychecks. i was wondering if it is mandatory for us to pay it to the government? do I expect to get it back when i file my tax returns next year. is it a fix percentage or does it vary with the income bracket? what percent does it make of the cash we get in hand?

Thanks
Manish

Manish:

I believe that it is a fixed percentage. I also believe that you must pay it even if you are an international student.

A phone call to the California Franchise Tax Board should get you a definite answer!
