My 5 years old Shih Tzu /Bichon mix scratches himself a lot. I have tried steroid from a vet which that only helped temporarily and I don't want to have to keep him on that for a long time , Benadryl tablets, oatmeal baths, change of diets( he is currently eating natural balance sweet potato and fish), fish oil. I rotate his flea meds so that his body does not get used to it but he gets one every 3-4 weeks. I sometimes find one flea or two randomly. This has become very frustrating and I feel very bad for him because he is now wearing an E-collar at all times. Please tell me what I can do?

Have you treated your surrounding areas such as carpets, bedding and drapes for fleas? Also, how often are you bathing her? Allergies really boil down to two things: food and environmental. It could be anything from your cleaning products to laundry soap to the weather outside. I know how frustrating it is to have an itchy dog. Have you tried expirimenting with foods? Usually fish blend is the go to for allergies, but sometimes a lamb can help as well. Have you tried adding extra omega oils? Cod liver oil is a great addition, so is sardines or salmon oil. You want to choose those deep sea fish for those really good omega fatty oils. What shampoo are you using? At my vet clinic we sell "allergroom" and it seems to work wonders for my dogs with allergies.

When you spread her toes on her feet, can you see red patches or red bumps, similar to bug bites between her toes? What about in her ears? Do her ears look red and waxy?

I have a dog that is allergic to fleas and we have this problem. The vet carries a beef flavored pill that he eats once a month. This kills the fleas almost instantly and keeps him free of fleas until the next dose is due.

Might be worth checking with your vet about this.

Yep, good point J, I was going to ask what flea treatment she was using. I really like Revolution.

Revolution or any of the others don't work for Xander. We have to get a pill monthly from the vet. I'm not sure, but I believe the name of it is Comfortis.
