My cat had only 1 kitten 10 months ago ( a boy ) She's a very small cat ( almost 5 years ) and the kitten has grown to quite a size now. He's a lot bigger than her. She was a great nursing mother. But now whenever he goes near her she growls and hisses at him. Then if he gets too close she will swipe at him. Is this normal? Also he will not go outside, of I put him out he just shakes and crys until I let him in, then he just hides. He is the size of a fully grown male cat. If anyone can help me with my two questions, I'd be very grateful.

Yes, it's normal for a mother to not want her adult kittens around her. Is it possible that she's pregnant? If so, then it's expected for her to try to get any remaining kittens to leave home so she can focus all her attention on the new litter, and so the previous litter doesn't eat food she needs for the new litter.

It sounds like he's just not cut out to be an outdoor cat. Not all cats like being outside. It just means you let him stay inside. Indoor cats are generally healthier and live longer than outdoor cats, anyway.

He's not really her kitten any longer. She may not even recognize him as a child of hers. He's a full-grown male, and if he hasn't been neutered, he may be somewhat of a threat to her if, especially as hheath said, she's pregnant again.

I plead with you to get your cats neutered and keep them indoors. If neither of them are, they will mate eventually with each other or with other unneutered cats in your neighborhood and produce more kittens. The world is already overrun with homeless cats and kittens. (I know because I'm one of those people who rescue them and try to find homes for them.)
