I have three cats, mom and her two babies which we kept. They are now around 8 months old but still nursing frequently, and mom seems to just let them. She has had kittens before that we kept and they never nursed this long. Can anyone tell me why they are doing this and if this is normal for so long? Thank you :)

I am surprised she has any milk left. She should have weaned them at five weeks. Kittens certainly need solid food now. You should remove them completely. Direct them to bowls of dry kitten food and that should put a stop to the nursing.

Are you sure you don't mean eight weeks old, instead of 8 months old? An 8 month old kitten is pretty big. Even at 8 weeks old they should be on solid food.

My aunts cat still nurses her kittens, there 6 months old. They eat solid food, but every once in a while you noticed them nursing. I don't think she has any milk left and Im not a cat whisperer but I think they do it for "comfort", its what they've always done...

Momma cat must have sore and sometimes bleeding nipples from sharp kitten teeth :)

My mommy-cat let her babies nurse until they were about 6 months old. She ONLY stopped because she ended up getting pregnant right before I got the boys fixed.

The only advise I have is to remove the kittens and make mom stand up when you see them nursing. Maybe use a squirt bottle to get the idea that nursing is not allowed.
