I have a kitten who is around 5weeks old I believe. He hasn't got a mom to give him milk and he's not to sure how to drink from a bowl.. what can I do? He ate a tiny piece of solid food but he really struggled.

The kitten isn't ready for solid food yet. Above all, please don't give it cow's milk (will cause diarrhea). Here's a site that will help --

http://fanciers.com/cat-faqs/orphans.shtml

The entire article is good. In particular, notice this:

"There are several good milk replacers on the market, available in liquid or powder form (my personal favorite is called Just Born). The ready-mix liquid is more convenient. Be sure the product is engineered for kittens and that it is fresh (some have a short shelf-life). Milk replacers can be found in any pet supplies store, most veterinary clinics, and even in some variety stores."

"While you are purchasing the milk replacer, find a good nurser. Most of these look like a baby bottle in miniature; I prefer the model with a pointy nipple. Pierce the nipple with a large-gauge needle (heated over a match) or ask the veterinarian to prepare the nurser for you. The nipple is constructed of tough stuff and is difficult to pierce; whatever you do do NOT cut the nipple with a knife or household scissors, however tempted you may be -- you may kill the kitten if you make the hole too large and flood its lungs. If you must resort to cutting, use a cuticle scissor and snip ever so delicately, then test (the flow should be a very thin stream) before offering the bottle to the kitten. If you did it wrong and made the hole too big, go out and buy another bottle or replacer nipple."

You will have to help the kitten with elimination until he gets the hang of it. That info as to how to do this is in the article too.

At 5 weeks, cats can start to eat solid food. Maybe offer canned food or mush up the cat food in warm water to make a gruel. The baby may still be dependent on mom at this point, but she would be introducing solid food at this point.

Oh yea, and cows milk is a big no-no. Actually, cats don't need to drink milk. They drink it due to the palability and texture. But if you insist on giving the kitten milk, try goats milk or the pre-packaged kitten milk by KMR
