What is an activation code?

When you purchase software or a suite, somewhere in the paperwork or on the box (or even sometimes on the disk itself but it's less likely) there will be an activation code you need to enter to activate the software. Most times you will have to be connected to the internet for the activation code to work, as opposed to a plain serial which often needs no connection.
