If you were legally married by 11:59 P.M. on 31 Dec 06, the IRS considers you married for the entire year of 2006.

You CANNOT claim your wife as a dependent. However, you CAN file jointly, which is much better as it doubles your Standard Deduction to $10,300 and you still get her personal exemption of $3,300.

So your combined personal exemptions will be $6,600 and your combined Standard Deduction will be $10,300.
