I just received a notice from the Child Support Services Department in which they claim my ex "has been making satisfactory" payments since February 2010. Whatttttt!? She is currently $252,000-plus in arrears and only started making $300 payments each month because they threatened to suspend her driver's license. Hmmmmmm...

Your ex went from owing $252,000+ in child support to $270,000+ in child support in a matter of 4 months?

Wow - I think if I was ordered to pay $4,500 a month in child support I would fall behind as well.

You wouldn't and shouldn't fall behind if you have an income of nearly 5 times that amount per month! Or, at least you shouldn't!

Believe me, a judge wouldn't order it, if it wasn't possible - they use the same guidelines for everyone - simple principal, you pay based on earnings. Right?

Not necessarily. Each state has different laws regarding child support. In fact, my husband's exwife just got her child support cut by over half because the court awarded her primary placement in the summer months - this means they then factored in her income, his income, the amount of time each parent had the children overnight and based support on that. Not the set standard in my state of 25% of gross income for two children.
