I'll give you an example:
4x - 4 = x-7
Make sure all the terms with x are on the same side. To do that, subtract x from both sides, and you get:
4x - 4-x = x-7-x
3x - 4 =-7
Now add 4 to both side to give:
3x -4 +4= -7+4
3x = -3
Now, divide both sides by 3 to give:
\frac{3x}{3} = \frac{-3}{3}
x = -1
See?
Or did you mean something else?
