I have a Trane XL1000 and a serviceman indicated that the TX valve needs replaced or he said it might be best to buy a new unit. The unit is about 17 years old but was working fine until this. He indicated that there are no way of knowing how long a replaced TX valve would last since there is a risk of getting contaminants in the system which might make the same thing happen again in two weeks or two years. Is this true or do TX valve replacements usually last awhile warranting the approximate $800 repair cost? Also, if I replace my 2.5 ton split system heat pump, should I go with a R22 system or R410A which costs more?

When the qualified service person replaces the Thermostatic expansion valve he will install a liquid line drier near the coil inside to prevent any contamination. That is if he is really qualified.

800.00 dollar repair????? The valve is about 50.00 a drier is about 30.00 and he should not need any R-22 because he is a professional and he will recover the refrigerant before he opens the system this way he will obey the EPA laws.

720.00 is a bunch of profit for a 1 1/2 hour job at the most.

Pricing on units depend upon local area.
