hello,

i have a john deere l120 lawn tractor that i am starting to have trouble w/. it seems there is a small fan on the transmission pulley that all of the blades have been torn off of. the drive belt is starting to smoke too. could the transmission be going out?

i've read several different posts of the transmissions going out on the l120. how can you tell if this is the problem. i do not feel any slipping in the transmission. just the visual damage to the fan & the smell from the drive belt.

thanks.First of all I'd get that fan (M809036) , and belt (GX20006) replaced.

You have to have that fan or else the belt, and tranny will let go.

Double check those numbers, If the belt still smokes then there is something else wrong.

Part number verified as correct. Yes, replace that fan, it cools the trans. Belt is probably out or has come out of the sheave previously and done that to the fan. Check the two idlers for viability, also.
The first production runs of the transaxle had problems. Later runs did not. The unot will fail by decreased speed/pulling power and is most noticeable in reverse since the machine only moves at half speed in that direction.
