This past spring I took out a 30 old Honeywell manual thermostat and installed a Hunter 44260. It seemed to work fine at least for A/C with my heat pump (no auxiliary heat). With colder weather I shifted the thermostat to heat mode. The fan comes on, but the compressor does not and there is no heat.

The four wires coming out of the wall under the thermostat did not have any labels. I am wired up as follows: Green wire to G, Red wired to RC, Jumper between RC and RH, Yellow wire to Y/O, Orange wire to W/B and nothing on Y1.

What have I done wrong?

Sincerely,
MGD67

only for wires?,,,doesn`t sound like a heatpump to me. what is brand name and model numbers of the heatpump?,,,,but again if you have no auxiliary heat,,,,you may not need more wires,,,,,,you might need to switch the yellow and orange wires,,,but note till you pass along the model numbers

WHP 028-1J is the model number. No indication of manufacturer.

Selector sw on the base must be set on HP and a wire connected to Y/1 to bring the compressor on . Y/o is the revesing valve to energize for cooling and W/B energize for heating. Only rheem uses w/b

Many thnaks for your help. I looked at my old Honeywell T87 still installed in the upstairs unit and saw that the yellow wire went to yellow as well as W. Since this no longer made any sense (to me) with the Hunter Thermostat, I cleaned up my Honeywell T87 I had removed from the downstairs unit and re-installed it. Everything works fine now, but now digital thermostats.

Thanks again.

you`re better of without a Hunter
