I have a murray riding lawnmower and it will crank but when I put it in gear to go forward I hear like a ticking sound and it will not go forward or backwards.

Hi,
It is an idler, belt or spring on the motion drive system; or if you had a rear wheel off, you did not put the key back in that locks the wheel to the axle.
