how do calculate the capacity of air conditioner

Til an AC guy gets here, their are numbers on the name plate, I believe it is 12 per Ton, so if you see a 36, it is 3 tons, 42 would be 3 1/2 Tons.
A couple of good AC guys here can provide a better way to interpret. Good Luck
