Is IE8 much superior to IE7?

I don't think so. IE8 Features (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/features/faster.aspx) covers some of the new features. Not all sites are IE8 compatible yet. IE7's paltry favorite management forced my switch to Firefox and IE8 offered nothing to motivate a switch back to IE.
