Hello,

I have recently been given a quite dated, but reasonable laptop.... probably top spec bit of kit 7 or 8 years ago! However, it is running on windows 2000, and I am having problems connecting it to the internet. Could anyone please help with this? currently we have a router in our shared house with a broadband connection but it is hard to get onto the web with. Or could anyone suggest if there are any cheap operating systems available as an alternative to windows2000 that I could use for the sole purpose of web surfing on the laptop.

Look forward to some replies

cheers

In the Windows family, I consider Windows 2000 to be one of the best operating systems that Microsoft has ever produced. What is the nature of the problem and your network configuration?

Any Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/), is really the only "cheap" alternative. However, any existing network configuration or hardware issues will likely be present in Linux as well, so I doubt switching will result in a magic fix.
