I have a Briggs & Stratton 5 hp 206cc magnatron. The cord was pulled out of place so I took it apart and it appeared to recoil just fine until I bolted it back onto the machine. Then... the cord did not go back in. Is there some way I can get the spring to rewind?

Click on the "Tools and Power Equipment" link in the upper left top. You will notice a few "Sticky's". One cover's restringing.

It's not for a lawn mower. This is for a water pump. It is a 5 hp 3600 R min J607. It does recoil by after being pulled, but when I mount it back onto the pump and try to pull start is does not recoil? It's there some clutch or something?

Can't look info up without the model type and code of the briggs engine, so I'll assume it's the older design.

If there is a bell shaped piece on top of the flywheel with a square shaft it's prone to problems. It should rotate in one direction only and not hang up in the opposite direction. Take the blower housing off and try rotating by hand.

It can be taken apart and cleaned, but there are 6 balls in he top. Don't loose them. The part can be replaced for about $15.00. Just put a little oil on the crankshaft threads when re-assembling.

Usually the engine grabs and squeaks every now and then when this part goes bad. This is probably why you replaced the rope?

Some of he other briggs designs use metal or plastic retracting grabbers.

You are right it is an older design, how old I have no idea it came with the property. The MODEL # 130252 TYPE 1549 01 CODE 84080207
Everything on it has been replaced. And it has a metal retracting grabber.
I did put some WD 40 and tried pulling again but it retracts very slowly and not all the way.?
Thanks

It can't have any oil or dust. It must be squeaky clean inside otherwise it won't work.

Item #66. Replace or take off disassemble and clean. No Oil. Just put a little on the shaft when reassembling. Don't loose the 6 balls.
