Security update KB971657 will not install. After configuration step 3 of 3, I get a blue screen. Error code: 800F0816.

I have made several attempts, disabled firewall and anti-virus, with no success. And checked for hardware and software updates. Computer is working fine, no evidence of problems and tests indicate no hardware problems. HP Media center PC with Vista home premium, SP2.

I found a similar issue on a vista machine and had to download and run special removal tools to fix it. Have you tried to google the error code?

Yep, none of the google returns solved the problem.

Check your system date and time. I found this while researching the issue in a tech forum: "Setting my PC clock to the correct time corrected the 80072F8F error for me
as well. " It can't hurt to try.
