I would like to ask about the Statue of Limitations and company GST.

I owned a small company in Ontario which because of various reasons owes GST to the government. This GST is from an audit in 1999 and 2000. The company has not been in operation since 2004.

I received a letter for demand payment in March of 2008. I responded to the letter by phone talking with the man. The amount was in question and we are not convinced we owe this amount or any at all.

I told them that I intended to appeal this but with life's stresses and busyness have not done so.

My question is this: Can I apply the Statute of Limitations .... two years ... for this debt.
How does this work with a business ... proprietorship not a corporation.
When does the time period start ... on March 2008... or 2004 when payment stopped.
Do I need to fill out forms to apply for "Forgiveness" and if so which forms. I see on the internet there are many forms for the "Forgiveness of Debt". How does this apply?

It is clear from your post that this is a Canadian tax question.

This post deals with U.S. tax issues.

BTW, the complexity of your case SCREAMS for professional tax help!
