The outdoor motor has an internal protection cutout inside of it, and it sounds like this is cutting out and then the motor cools and it starts again. One big cause of this is that the motor has not been oiled in quite some time so if I were you I would try oiling the motor first. (BE SURE THAT THE BREAKER IS OFF AND THE THERMOSTAT IS OFF) If you will look on the side of the motor just where the motor goes from being the top and it turns into the side, this is probably a silver color and the side then turns black. You are looking for a hole in the side of the motor, it could have a plug in it about the size of a match head. Squirt oil into this hole, it does not matter if some runs out but put a lot in the hole. Now use you hand and turn the motor back and forth, now you are ready to turn the AC Back on and see how long it runs.
