During 2008, I believe I would be considered a part-time resident of Michigan and also a part-time resident of Oregon. I worked and lived in Michigan up until August of 2008, and then worked and lived in Oregon (daughter also transferred schools) from September thru December of 2008.

If I was a part-time resident of both states during 2008, would I do each state return completely separate from one another? Does the income from either state need to be reflected on the other state's return?

I need to file my returns ASAP, and any help on this subject would be greartly appreciated.

While you are taxed only on income earned within each respective state, your TOTAL income is used to determine the tax rate at which you are taxed.

Further, to ensure that both states know that you are paying taxes to the other state, I routinely provide a copy of the other state's tax return when I submit a part-year resident tax return. This answers questions before they can be asked.
